What you’re hoping to see and do will have a huge impact on when you visit the polar regions. Midwinter in the poles means round the clock darkness and sea ice, making much of these regions inaccessible through winter. Spring and autumn offer a more even distribution of day and night, making this a better time for exploring the poles. Summer offers the mildest weather and the most light, so summer yours are the most popular by far. The kinds of wildlife you’re hoping to see will also have a big impact on when to travel, and your Escapes by BFP expert adviser can help you plan the trip at the best possible time to meet your needs and wishes.

Best time of year to visit Arctic & Antarctica

December to February

High summer in Antarctica is a great time to see penguins and seals. The long days allow plenty of light for spotting the stunning wildlife which calls Antarctica home. Christmas can be a popular time to visit, so be sure to book well in advance. Penguin chicks are born in the summertime, so this is a great time to spot these beautiful creatures. The sea ice and darkness make the Arctic inaccessible by boat at this time.

March to May

March is one of the best months for spotting humpbacks, orcas and sperm whales off the coast of Antarctica, and penguin chicks are fledging ahead of the winter weather setting in. From April to September, Antarctica is largely inaccessible.
The continuing dark and sea ice in the Arctic means the region is not accessible by boat and this is a poor time of year to visit.

June to August

Antarctica is inaccessible at this time of year due to stormy seas and icy conditions. However, it’s summertime in the Arctic and a wonderful time to see polar bears, hungry from winter, hunting seals out on the ice. July and August are the most popular time to visit the Arctic, and it’s the best time for whale watching, with humpbacks and even blue whales visiting the Arctic waters.

September to November

September is a good time to visit the Arctic if you’re hoping to see the Northern Lights, as the nights begin to lengthen and the phenomenon becomes observable one again. Late October sees Antarctica opening up again, and by November, you’ll be able to see some fascinating mating rituals from the animal residents, especially the seals.

As remote as the polar regions are, you can still enjoy them in style. Most expeditions to the poles are from cruise ships, and some of these are as luxurious as you could wish for. Combine fantastic food and a wide array of amenities with views of some of the most remote and beautiful corners of the earth.

The team at Escapes by BFP can guide you towards the best options for you, and design a tour entirely around what you’re hoping to see on your polar adventure. A trip to one of these remarkable places will be truly unforgettable, and with Escapes by BFP, you’ll know you’re getting the very best.
