December to April is the dry season in Central America and is the most popular time to visit. Rain is often heavy during the wet season and while the weather remains warm, high humidity can be uncomfortable for some. The weather throughout Central America is generally fairly hot, though it can get cool in mountainous regions, especially at nighttime.
The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is warm and dry from May through to September, making this a great time to visit this part of the country. There are lots of wonderful festivals and cultural events throughout Central America, and it’s worth looking into these before planning a trip.
December to February is the dry season across Central America, making it a very popular time of year for visiting the region. Lots of visitors flock to Central America for winter sun, and at Christmas in particular, things book up well in advance, so it’s important to book early to avoid disappointment. Whether you want to lounge on a beach, explore a temple or trek through the jungle, this is a great time of year to do it.
March and April are hot and sunny months, and many places in Central America hold wonderful festivals around Holy Week which are fantastic to experience. By May, the rainy season is beginning, which means higher temperatures and higher humidity, with a chance of heavy intermittent downpours. Nicaragua’s birdlife is at its very best, and the national parks are quieter and very enjoyable to explore.
June through to August is rainy season across Central America, with heavy rainfall breaking the humidity, often followed by period of sunshine and blue skies. In Costa Rica, whales and turtles can be seen all along the coast through July and August and this is a wonderful time of year to go snorkeling or diving with these incredible sea creatures. Guatemala and Belize host big festivals in August which are popular with both locals and visitors.
September and October are peak rainy season across Central America with the possibility of tropical storms and a small risk of hurricanes. Travelling to remote destinations can become difficult as the roads become increasingly muddy and waterlogged. By November, rain has begun to ease as the region moves closer to its dry season. This is a great time to obtain some excellent deals as the weather improves but the influx of visitors in December is still a month away.
