India and the surrounding islands span a huge amount of ground, and what you’re looking for from your visit will have a significant impact on the best time of year to go. India is warm and dry from October to March, making this a popular time to visit much of the subcontinent. April and May are characterised by high humidity and thunderstorms, which can make conditions in the countryside challenging, although it can be a good time to visit the cities if you’re looking for a less touristy feel.

Different parts of Sri Lanka have monsoon season at different times, so it’s important to check this ahead of booking your holiday. Many of the islands in the Indian Ocean enjoy a huge amount of sunny weather each year, making them almost year-round destinations.

Best time of year to visit Indian Ocean & Indian Subcontinent

December to February

India is warm and dry at this time of year, and it’s a fantastic time for exploring the countryside and going on jungle safaris. February is a particularly good month in India as the cool fogs have gone but the wet weather is yet to begin.
Christmas is a hugely popular time to visit the sunny islands of the Indian Ocean, so you’ll need to book well in advance for December travel. January and February are stunning in the Maldives and Seychelles, making them perfect winter sun destinations.

March to May

The Maldives continue to be lovely in March, and this is a great time for whale watching off the coast of Sri Lanka. March is also when the festival of Holi takes place in India, a very popular time to visit to see the incredible colours exploding into life.
April and May are fantastic in the Seychelles and Mauritius, making this a popular time to visit. April is a great time to spot wildlife in India, as dryer weather means animals stay closer to watering holes. By May, the weather becomes exceptionally hot and humidity can reach uncomfortable levels.

June to August

Mauritius is lovely and warm in June, making this a popular time to visit the island. The wildlife on Sri Lanka’s east coast is wonderful in July so it’s a good time to go on safari there.
July and August are monsoon season across much of India, making this a great time of year for cruising on the Ganges. Mauritius is warm and dry in August, as is the north and east of Sri Lanka.

September to November

By September the rains have eased across northern India making this a good time to visit Rajasthan, but heavy rain in the south can make much of the region hard to access in September. October and November are warm and sunny across much of India, making this a great time to visit. Diwali takes place in November and is a very special time to visit the country.
Mauritius is at its best in October, and while there’s a possibility of rain in the Maldives, this is a great time of year to see whale sharks and rays.

India and the surrounding islands are home to some wonderful hotels. From glass bottomed cabins in the Maldives where you can observe the glorious array of marine life beneath your feet to gorgeous converted colonial mansions in Calcutta, there’s options out there to suit any traveller.

Many hotels cater specifically to families or to couples, and our team can point you towards options which will suit you and your needs. Whatever amenities you’re looking for from your ultimate hotel, from infinity pools to spas or kids’ clubs, we can find you the perfect place from which to explore India and the surrounding islands.
