Southern Cook Islands

The Southern Cook Islands are renowned for their remarkably laid back way of life, almost complete absence of traffic and, like many of the islands in the South Pacific, their unbelievable beauty. Visit the popular island of Rarotonga and learn about the culture and history of the Southern Cook Islands. Make the most of the island’s small independent shops to pick up some beautiful objects created by local artisans.

Head to the island of Aitutaki with its famous blue lagoon, surrounded by palm trees and teeming with tropical fish. Relax on one of the amazing sandy beaches of the Southern Cook Islands and enjoy the incredible amenities which the islands’ amazing resorts and hotels boast.

The South Pacific is warm for most of the year, but the driest weather for much of the region is from April to November, making this the most popular time to travel there. In November to April, much of the South Pacific can at times experience spells of heavy rain, but these are generally brief and contribute to the glorious lushness of the islands. Tropical storms are quite rare.

Your plans for you time in the South Pacific will impact the best time for you to visit the region, and the experienced team at Escapes by BFP will help you plan a trip accordingly.

Best time of year to visit South Pacific

December to February

December in the South Pacific is the wet season, but showers are generally brief but heavy and persistent rain is rare. This is a good time to go if you’re looking to spend Christmas on the beach and don’t mind the possibility of occasional rain. January is a good time to visit Tahiti as the French Polynesian Chinese community there celebrates Chinese New Year. The wet season continues throughout January and February, although the weather remains warm and showers cut through the humidity.

March to May

March sees the rainy season tail off in the Cook Islands, making this a great time to visit before the increase of visitors for the dry season. The good weather on the Cook Islands continues through April and May, and much of the rest of the South Pacific enters its dry season as well, with visitor numbers on the increase.

June to August

This is peak time for visiting the South Pacific to make the most of the beautiful sunny weather and enjoy the range of outdoor pursuits available on the islands. In July and August, you may have the opportunity to see humpback whales in the waters of the Southern Cook Islands.

September to November

Fiji is glorious in September, with settled weather and endless sunshine. The lagoons of the Cook Islands look their most blue at this time of year thanks to the angle of the sun onto the water. By November, the humidity has crept up and rains become more likely across much of the South Pacific as it moves into its wet season, but rainfall tends to be short and heavy.

The South Pacific is home to some truly wonderful hotels, from romantic cabins right on the water to larger resorts with lots more opportunities for young children. The right place to stay depends entirely on what you’re looking for from your time in the South Pacific.

Enjoy luxurious comfort in one of the fantastic hotels in Bora Bora or Fiji, with their famous thatched huts out in the ocean where you can see the amazing array of marine life all around you. Have an authentic local experience in one of the small hotels which are found in the South Pacific’s towns and cities or get back to nature at a beautiful camp in the wilderness.

Whatever kind of hotel you’re looking for, the Escapes by BFP team can recommend the perfect option for you, one which comes with every amenity you’re hoping for.
