The best time to go on safari depends entirely on where you would like to go and what you’re hoping to see when you get there. The dry season throughout much of Africa runs from May through to September, and wildlife is easier to spot at this time thanks to its tendency to stay near water sources.
However, the wetter months of November to April offer green, lush scenery and a different kind of beauty. This is a wonderful time to enjoy Africa’s spectacular bird life and the time you’re most likely to get some fantastic deals. While some countries in Africa will experience a lot of heavy rain at certain times, this is not true everywhere and there are many destinations worth visiting in the green season.
This is the peak of the wet season, which means it’s not the best time to visit the large Southern game reserves. However, it’s a wonderful time to visit Kenya where the rains are brief. This is the time when many species give birth, so you’ll have the opportunity to spot some young animals, including crocodiles. January is when birds head south to give birth, so for avid birdwatchers this provides a unique opportunity to see huge flocks of birds with their young, especially in Namibia.
March is when the weather is at its most uncertain across much of Africa, making luxury trips particularly reasonably priced at this time. In Botswana, April is antelope breeding season so you might be able to witness some spectacular mating rituals and fierce fighting between the bucks. Humpback whales also move up the East African coast to have their calves, so if whale watching is for you, it’s a great time to visit Tanzania and Kenya.
This is peak time for visiting Africa if you’re hoping to see the Big Five on your safari. Drier weather means the animals stay close to water sources, and this makes it easier to track them. The Great Migration begins in July, with herds starting to gather in the Serengeti, and reaches its peak in August, especially in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. This is a wonderful opportunity to see immense herds of zebra and wildebeest crossing Kenya’s rivers, and predators flocking to attack stragglers. This is also peak whale watching season in South Africa, making it a great time to visit.
September is a wonderful time to see elephant in Tanzania as they gather in the grasslands. It’s also when temperatures in Namibia are at their most pleasant, so this is a popular time to visit. Through October and November, rains begin to set in across much of Africa making this a good time to get some great deals on trips. Migrating herds begin to travel South, and these are good months to spot them moving across the Serengeti.
